It’s been a chaotic week in women’s football — England are through to the semis after a nail-biting 3-2 win over Sweden (penalties! drama!). Captain Leah Williamson is a bit bruised but expected to be back for Tuesday’s clash with Italy — and frankly, we’re drawing a lot of inspiration from her grit and grace… especially when slicing the carrot cake.
So, here’s today’s starting line-up at the Coffee Shop — kicking off slightly later than planned (sorry, we’re more WSL than Premier League when it comes to social media timings).
Today’s team sheet:
🍰 Carolyn’s Victoria sponge – a classic number 10: light on its feet, but deadly in the final third.
🍋 Jackie’s lemon drizzle – full of zip and zing, she’s got that cut-through-the-defence energy.
😋 Kate’s traybake – the utility player. Sweet, reliable, and good wherever you put it.
🥕 Nicki’s carrot cake – earthy, solid, surprisingly nimble. Think Jill Scott, but with cream cheese frosting.
🍪 Sarah’s almond cookies – little but fierce. Defends your snack cravings like a seasoned centre-back.
🍒 Nicki’s Bakewell loaf – cherry-picked perfection. A Bakewell in loaf form? Tactical genius.
☕ Jackie’s coffee and walnut – like Leah herself: strong, balanced, and not afraid to boss the midfield.
And on barista duties today: Helen — queen of the coffee counter, quick on the draw with a flat white and faster than VAR when it comes to slicing cake and settling who gets the last piece.
If you’ve already been down today, you’ve likely already celebrated with cake. If not… well, you might be heading into extra time at this point. But don’t worry — even a crumb is a win when the cakes are this good.
Up next: England vs Italy on Tuesday. Until then, stay hydrated, eat cake, and support your local midfield (and your local coffee shop).
