St John's Coffee Shop

Keeping the Doors Open

HOW WE STARTED

Back in 2019, St. John’s Church was going through a tough time, with bills piling up and concerns that it might not make it after 130 years of serving the community. But the church committee had a spark of inspiration—what if a volunteer-run coffee shop could help raise the funds needed to keep the doors open? The idea caught on quickly, and before long, the coffee shop became a beloved gathering place where people could enjoy coffee, homemade treats, and good company. Thanks to the generosity of so many, the church was able to continue its work, with the coffee shop helping to cover the bills.

A Legacy of Growth

HOW WE GREW

In 2022, a generous family from the parish left a beautiful legacy to St John’s. Through continuing to run our coffee shop, we have been able to pay the bills while setting the legacy aside for improvements to the church. We bought new carpets and furniture, and we even built an extension, including a new kitchen, toilet, and storage room. Today, both the church and the coffee shop are thriving, creating a warm, welcoming space for everyone, and continuing to bring the community together in a truly special way.

Homemade with love by volunteers

OUR CAKE

Every cake at St John’s Coffee Shop is lovingly homemade by our talented volunteer bakers, bringing a delicious variety to our counter each week. Among the favourites, Jackie’s famous lemon drizzle is a zesty classic, while Val’s rich devil’s food cake is pure chocolate indulgence. Nicki’s spiced carrot cake is a must-try, and Diane’s orange and coconut cake adds a tropical delight. We’re also lucky to have Sarah, a professional baker, who treats us to her beautifully crafted cupcakes, cakes, and cookies. Other fantastic bakes come from Bea, Liz, Kate, Carolyn, and Sue, whose creations vary.

With such a wonderful team of bakers, there’s always an exciting selection to choose from. Some, like Jackie and Nicki, are known for their signature bakes, while others surprise us each week with something different. And it’s not just the names listed here—many other generous volunteers also contribute their homemade treats, ensuring there’s always something fresh, unique, and delicious to enjoy!

After a good ride on my mountain bike, I often stop here for a refreshing drink and a well-earned snack. There’s something about sipping a lovely cup of tea while surrounded by nature that makes the experience so much better. The homemade cakes are absolutely delicious! Every time I’ve been, there’s a new treat to try, and they never disappoint. The friendly volunteers and cozy atmosphere make it a spot I keep coming back to. Highly recommend it!

I’ve travelled from Manchester more than once—either on a bike ride or a walk—just to visit this coffee shop. The cakes are amazing, easily some of the best I’ve had. Last time, I tried Kate’s marshmallow cake, and it was excellent. I always get a flat white, and it’s consistently great. The setup is simple but welcoming, and being outdoors just adds to the charm—perfect for a break in the fresh air, especially if you're partway through a bike ride or walk in the countryside. If you’re after good coffee and even better cakes, it’s well worth the trip. I’ll definitely be back.

I always make sure to get Jackie’s lemon drizzle and a flat white coffee – they’re absolutely worth it! Delicious every time. The volunteers are lovely, and the place is always spotless. I can't rate it highly enough. I make a special drive just to visit, usually in the summer, and I come several times throughout the year. It's such a good cause, and I really hope others will support it too!
