Well, here we are. The August Bank Holiday has arrived… the last long weekend before autumn properly takes hold, and the weekend of festivals 🎪, carnivals 🥁, questionable barbecue attempts between rain showers, and that particular British optimism that insists on outdoor plans regardless of the forecast. The Met Office reckons there’s a good chance of rain this weekend (shock horror), so consider this your official permission slip to swap the paddling pool for a pot of tea and a very large slice of cake.
Our cake counter is groaning under the weight of some seriously good bakes, and every one pairs beautifully with the last breath of summer. This is not a weekend for half measures.
🥕 Nicki’s Carrot Cake: Moist, spiced, and topped with cream cheese frosting so good it should come with a warning label. The unofficial mascot of “one more slice won’t hurt.”
🍫 Andrea’s Chocolate Courgette Cake: A rich, fudgy chocolate cake that makes an excellent case for sneaking veg into dessert.
🍋 Jackie’s Lemon Drizzle: Zingy, sticky, and sunshine in cake form, which feels appropriate given the sunshine itself is currently on a break.
🍓 Esther’s Raspberry and White Chocolate Blondies: Gooey, sweet, and studded with tart raspberries. The blondie equivalent of a warm hug on a grey day.
🍰 Sue’s Strawberry Victoria Sponge: A proper British classic for a proper British Bank Holiday. Jam, cream, and just enough strawberries to make you feel very smug about eating your five-a-day.
🍪 Sarah’s Almond Cookies: Crumbly, nutty, and perfectly sized for “just a little something” with your coffee, or for eating three in a row.
🫐 Jane’s Lemon and Blueberry: Fruity, fresh, and the kind of bake that makes you feel vaguely virtuous, even though it’s still cake.
🌰 Jackie’s Coffee and Walnut Cake: A café classic for a reason. If you’re going to drink coffee while eating cake, you may as well go all in.
So see you on Saturday. Bring an umbrella (just in case)☂️. Leave room for cake 🍰.
